Full disclosure: none of these recipes are original to me, but if they are you’ll be sure to know. I know field meals are a common occurrence for many farm families, and planning them is about as hard as preparing them, so in an effort to share “best practices” I thought I’d share my menu plans here. We’ll feed as few as four or as many as twelve, depending on the day and who stops to visit right about dinner time. and stop sometime between 9 and 10 p.m., keeping them nourished becomes our contribution to harvest. When our farmers head to the field at 5 a.m. Now as a farmer’s wife, I join my mother-in-law and sister-in-law dividing the week to take dinner to the field. Ham sandwiches laden with garden goodies, chips, veggies and fruit and always a sweet treat. I hope this helps spark creativity and gets you cookin’ something new for all of your farm or ranch helpers! Lord knows that the one who feeds everyone is an important and integral part of the well oiled machine that is farming and ranching. My sister and I grew up helping our mother prepare lunches for the fields. But I also stuck a couple of “healthier” ones in there too. They are approved for those meat and potatoes types, whether guy or gal. Many of these recipes are designed to have on hand, eat on-the-go, are freezable, or are simply quick to throw together. I wanted to compile a list of recipes to help inspire and give you (and me) a place to look when we am not sure what to cook or when we need a last minute recipe to feed a bunch of hungry mouths. The years I don’t I am left unprepared and unsure of what to cook, so I usually default back to our old standby recipes or scramble to compile a plan of recipes. Every year I tell myself I am going to be more prepared and have things on hand to help feed an ever-busy, can barely stop to eat farmer and agronomist. Doesn’t matter what season it is whether it be spring planting or fall harvest, it always feels like it goes from zero to hundred in the blink of an eye.
